Tasks of Wind Turbine Technicians

In theory, wind turbine technicians (also known as wind techs) install, maintain, and repair wind turbines.

Wind turbines are large mechanical devices that convert wind energy into electricity. It’s typically made up of three major components: a tower, three blades, and a nacelle. The nacelle includes the outer case, generator, gearbox, and breaks.

Wind techs install and repair these structures. They can also be involved in building new wind turbines. However, most of their work is in maintenance and making sure the equipment generates electricity correctly.

Every turbine is monitored 24 hours a day, electronically, from a central office. Once the monitors detect any errors, wind techs must travel on-site to make urgent repairs to keep the system running. Usually, maintaining a turbine includes inspection and lubrication. But for turbines that operate all year round, it’s required to maintain them at least thrice a year.

Skills Needed to Become a Wind Turbine Technician

Being a wind tech doesn’t only require having the skills and knowledge to maintain wind turbines. The work also requires communication skills, attention to detail, and mechanical skills. On top of that, every technician should maintain good physical stamina, physical strength, and troubleshooting skills.

Degree and Training of a Wind Turbine Technician

As of writing, there isn’t a direct degree that points to becoming a wind turbine technician after university. However, if you want to become one, you would be required to attend a technical school or training centre. It also helps to have complete certifications in wind energy technology.

Many technical schools have onsite wind turbines that students can tinker with as a part of their program. On top of learning theories, aspiring wind techs should also learn the basics in other areas, such as rescue, safety, and first aid. Techs should also know electrical and hydraulic maintenance, braking systems, computers, and programmable logic control systems.

After attending a technical school or training centre, wind techs will receive 12 months of extensive on-the-job training to further prepare them for the responsibilities that they will encounter in the industry. During training, wind techs undergo manufacturer training. Other on-the-job training may or may not include an internship focused alongside a wind turbine service contractor.

To top it all off, a non-mandatory professional certification such as GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT) can demonstrate a basic level of knowledge and competence. Certification can become a technician’s leverage against other applicants because some employers prefer hiring certified workers to know the things needed in the workplace.

Some schools offer certifications for some of their subjects suggested. Meanwhile, some degree programs automatically include these certifications.
