The Most Sustainable Electricity System in Britain – A Green 2021
Britain’s impressive record 46g back in May 2020 to the next level, smashing the grid with its production of only a whopping 39g of carbon dioxide. According to the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), this was the lowest ever recorded for the grid, making the bank holiday an even happier experience for everyone.
Wind turbines and solar farms took centre stage as they generated a staggering 60 per cent of electricity throughout the country. However, other low-carbon sources joined the limelight as the UK’s nuclear reactors contributed to 16 per cent of the electricity mix at 13:00 BST on Monday. Generally, this means that low-carbon sources powered almost 80 per cent of the grid.
Breaking Records Every Year – Sustainable Electricity
This isn’t the first time Britain broke records, as last year saw an impressive step in the sustainable energy movement, with the country’s electricity mix reaching a 68-day, coal-free run from April 10 to June 16, 2020. Meanwhile, solar farms spearheaded more than a third of the electricity supplies sometime in May.
Christmas was a season of giving, but one of the greatest gifts Britain received was celebrating the time of the year coal-free.
Moving forward, Britain successfully reached another ground-breaking record as its wind turbines pushed its electricity production to greater heights on the 13th of February this year. With a steady improvement in renewable energy, you can have peace of mind knowing that we’re steadily moving away from fossil fuels.
The Bottom Line: Reaching the Greenest Electricity System Britain Has Ever Achieved
People say it’s always greener on the other side, but luckily for Britain, they’ve hit the jackpot in sustainable living as the country has reached the greenest month in history. As the world grows increasingly eco-conscious, Britain strives to clean up their electricity system and aim to operate carbon-free by 2025, a dream worth working on for the long haul.
While Britain is still far from reaching the end of its journey to greener living, people can confidently say that everyone has a hand at helping the country pull away from fossil fuels and let renewable energy dominate the landscape.
